Winter and the Spring 2005

Some pictures of Linda's Garden ! Take a look.

New classes in April and May; click "Class Calendar" for more information.

In central Arizona it is such a short journey from winter to spring that I am putting them together! In our Garden, the winter frost is a challenge but I don't stress over it. I allow the things that make it through the frost, come back better and stronger in the spring and the other things that didn't make it through, I replant. Most of the plants that don't make it through the Phoenix winter aren't meant to thrive in the cold. The perennials have grown a bit and I let them brave the cold without covering them. Most made it through.

We have had a nice wet last couple of months and the chamomile and
wildflowers (and weeds – eeks!) are about as happy as they can be. Spring bulbs are popping up everywhere and the peach tree is already budding in mid January, for its fruit will be ready in mid May. With all this anticipation in the garden, there are also aphids starting to find their way and I am hoping the ladybugs will come in right behind them!

By mid January, I have started all the tomato plants, peppers and eggplant I can imagine in the garden. I have high hopes for the tomato varieties that produced so well for me in the past. They include Grape Juliet (top producer into August!), Garden Peach, Green Zebra and Black From Tula.

In March, look for Country Garden Magazine (a Better Homes and Gardens magazine) for a feature article on my "Flavored Waters" recipes and photos. Also, this Spring I will have some new recipe booklets available for purchase. Let me know if you would like to know when they are hot off the press!

Got to go dig in the dirt now. It is time to start some herb seeds!

All the best, naturally!

Ah! the Arizona Summer! - 2004

We now have the first set of pictures of Linda's Garden ! Take a look.

The summer is here - and this, too, shall pass! The fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, eggplant and beautiful sunflowers, zinnias and herbs help make the summers a bit more bearable. With water and afternoon shade, there are lots of things that can grow this time of year. And believe it or not, it will soon be time to start getting into planting for fall! No need to worry if you don't have a yard to garden in, there are lots of gardeners who grow everything in pots - I did for several years.

Come and join the Edible Gardening and Cooking series that starts the end of August (the August class is in the air conditioning!). We meet once a month and talk gardening for the first half of the class and then we harvest and cook from the garden the second part of the class. This is my third year to offer this class. It has been very well received and some students repeat the class because it is so fun and informative. We also discuss herbs and their health benefits and learn delicious ways to include them in foods and beverages. This class series is fun to take with a friend or family member and is a great way to make new friends, for gardeners and garden lovers are great folks! Call to register today! Registration is by Southwest Gardener 602-279-9510.

Meanwhile, enjoy your summer and make the most of it. Afternoons are the time to be indoors for reading, playing with the kids and even to sneak in a little siesta! Look through the recipes I have posted and find a few to try out. The Soothing Sunburn Mist is great to have handy for the summer, and it smells sooo good, too. The teas are delicious (Cinnamon Mint) and (Fruity Herbal Teas) and the Flavored Waters are divine!

Thank you all for your continued interest! All the best, naturally!

Spring is here! - 2004

The sunshine is a plenty, well not over flowing yet, that is! We'll have to wait till mid April for that. Everything is gorgeously happy and every flower is so alive with excitement for another spurt of growth for it's kind, competing and cooperating with other species in the ecosystem called Linda's Garden !
We will be adding some more pictures of the Garden.

Linda shows you how to make delicious Vinegars in the class titled "Potted Herbs and Vinegars with fresh herbs and flowers". Click here for details. The class is held at AndyFood.

Winter Happenings

Before you read this, please make sure you plants outside are covered. We are having quite a bit of frost and the Tomatoes, Squash, Basil and many other plants are having a very difficult time. Even the hardy plants that have been around a couple of years find it difficult to get through the freeze.

The Gardening/Cooking Series! is in full swing. We will be posting information here, about some of the fun things we are doing in the class. Look for it here in the future.

Summer Happenings - 2003

Yes, it is hot and yes the garden is thriving, thanks to water and a bit of shade cloth! Even I am surviving and loving the tomato bounty right now!
It is so much fun to experience all the different heirloom varieties.  So far my favorite is "Black From Tula", a big dark red/purple tomato that is so sweet and juicy.  The boys like the Tigrella and Red Plums.  Their friends like the Yellow Pears and the Yellow Prize of the Trails big cherry size tomato.
We are also getting lots of Romanesco Zucchini and Armenian Cucumbers and are just starting to get Trombocino Zucchini that are really amazing.  Our biggest one was nearly 3 feet long and curved around in a most interesting way.

Of course the Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Lavender, Mint, Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena and Summer Savory et al are beautiful & tasty additions to summer foods.

For flowers we are clipping colorful Zinnias, Cosmos and Sunflowers.  Join me in the Garden series Class that starting in August and September to find out how you can create and enjoy your own garden bounty!
