Eye Health
As seen on the Sonoran Living program.

As we get older, for most of us the vision starts getting affected. The body gets overloaded with oxidizing free radicals and that most often affects the tiniest of the blood vessels first – hence the eyes get their share early on! There can be other reasons for vision degeneration as well, including lack of good nutrition, stress, work habits and many more.

Some things that may help keep your vision better longer:

  1. Exercise – EYES, too! (roll and stretch)
  2. Sunglasses – protect from UV rays
Ultraviolet sunrays promote oxidation that is not good for eyes.
  3. Supplement diet – in the form of good whole foods vitamins and minerals (especially for someone who is not getting good nutrients), and if eye health is a high priority concern, consider taking a good supplement that is made specifically for eye health.
  4. Avoid peeking into the microwave while in operation, unless really necessary.
  5. AVOID SMOKING AND SMOKEY ENVIRONMENTS.
  6. Antioxidants – Many foods provide great source of Antioxidants like garlic, onions, turnips, carrots, tomatoes and cruciferous veggies. It's a good idea to take a supplement of anti-oxidants as well.
  7. Omega 3 fatty acids – See other info and recipes on my web site about what, where and how to use these.
  8. Eat and drink COLOR! Don’t worry about which vegetable/fruit gives you which nutrients, etc. Keep it simple! CHOOSE COLOR! Now, I don't mean arificial coloring! So some folks may find it disappointing but the green colored pickle relish on a burger does not count .

    Fruits and Veggies:
    • RED, PURPLE.... often have high content of bioflavinoids that help get nutrients to the tiniest of capillaries, e.g. Bilberry (well known for benefits to the eyes), Blueberry, Red Wine, Grape Juice, Cranberry Juice.

    • ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN.... Usually high in beta-carotene and vitamin A. Eat your carrots _ Mom was right!
  9. Juices – great way to get nutrients and easy to absorb. I'm not talking about the frozen variety. Make or buy a fresh vegetable or fruit juice at home or at a good Juice Bar. Use Organic produce. Example: Try Carrot juice with Beets and Apples.
  10. What’s NOT on this list to eat? Refined sugar, Processed foods, Hydrogenated oils.
