Kale and Shiitake Mushrooms with Healing Trinity
Cancer – Natural Resources to help strengthen the body’s fight against cancer.
As seen on the Sonoran
Living program.
It is becoming increasingly clear that taking an active part in our own healing is required. We can not sit and be at the mercy of the medical establishment, because no one knows our bodies and habits as well as we do. When it come to degenerative diseases like cancer, we must look long and hard at our lifestyle and habits to seek out some important changes that we may need to make in order to give our bodies a fighting chance to live.
I have listed three books that I recommend to get you started on your discovery about natural approaches to stave away cancer and/or to help the body fight cancer. These books are all written to be easily understood and are written by people who are well respected alternative medicine researchers and providers. They cover natural therapies, including foods, herbs, supplements and physical therapies that are designed to work with the body during conventional therapies including chemotherapy and radiation that can increase success rates dramatically.
After the book listing, I have written a recipe for a great cancer fighting food. It features a healing trinity blend that is a good base to be used for many vegetable preparations.
At the end of this page, there are links to other recipes that refer to cancer on my web site.
Books:
Herbal Medicine, Healing & Cancer by Donald R. Yance., Jr., C.N., M.H., A.H.G.
A very easy to read book that is packed with valuable knowledge and clinical experience. Yance has worked with thousands of cancer patients. His book includes protocols that have been used during chemo and radiation, as well as therapies to use for specific types of cancer. He has an excellent product resource list. Yance has a clinic where highly trained nutritionists and herbalists work with patients who are wanting to be guided with ways to help support their bodies as they go through their fight against cancer, often with conventional therapies. Many patients use their clinic’s expertise via long distance, so it is not necessary to physically go to the clinic. Their web site is www.centrehealing.com.
Total Breast Health by Robin Keuneke
"A Best Book of the Year" - Publishers Weekly
Though this book has a focus on breast cancer, it is also an excellent resource for learning about power foods for protection and wellness. Robin Keuneke is a “foodie” and she has many great recipe ideas in the book for foods that will help fight off cancer and/or to help the fight of getting rid of cancer. The book includes personal stories as well as Q and A’s with some well known herbalists and naturopaths. It is easy to read and has a good resource list for magazines, newsletters and web sites to help you gain information from a wide variety of sources.
Essiac, A Native Herbal Cancer Remedy by Cynthia Olsen, Paul Bond
This book tells a story about Rene Cassie, a Canadian nurse who made the popular cancer fighting Essiac Tea known and available to many. The recipe for Essiac Tea came from a Native American medicine man in the early 1900’s. Thousands have used Essiac Tea to rid themselves of cancer. I bring this book to you to encourage you to research more about Essiac. It is a good formula to use for prevention as well. It is a synergistic blend of powerful herbs, so if you are taking any medications or have any health concerns, it is important that you work with a healthcare practitioner and/or a doctor before using the tea. There is a lot of information about Essiac Tea on the internet as well. As with any good research, make sure to read a variety of sources. Essiac Tea can now be found at most health food stores.
Recipe - Kale and Shiitake Mushrooms with Healing Trinity.
Make the healing trinity spice blend to cook a variety of vegetables with– especially leafy greens. Every ingredient has something to offer nutritionally to strengthen the body against cancer. I love this served on top of a baked potato and/or along side a roasted chicken or lemon sole.
Ingredients:
| 1 bunch |
fresh kale or other leafy green like chard, mustard or beet greens |
| 1-2 cups |
sliced shiitake mushrooms (find them at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods/Wild Oats) |
Healing Trinity Blend Ingredients:
| 1 large |
onion, chopped in small pieces |
| 2-3 inch |
"finger" of fresh ginger, minced or grated (about 3-4 TBL) |
| 1 T |
turmeric powder |
| optional |
fresh garlic (2-3 cloves minced) |
| 1-2 T |
Ghee (clarified butter) or olive oil |
Method:
Put ghee or olive oil in a skillet on medium/high heat. Add onions and cook stirring for about 5 minutes then add the ginger and turmeric (and garlic if using) and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Add a couple of tablespoons of water if it gets too dry at this stage. Stir in shiitake mushrooms and sauté for three or four minutes before adding the kale. Sauté, stirring often, for 5-7 minutes, or until desired texture of greens is reached.
Enjoy!
