Stinky Germy Challenges: Aromatherapy to the rescue!
As seen on the Sonoran
Living program.
It’s summer time, and you may have noticed that things have gotten a bit more sweaty and well, stinky, around the house. From musty dirty clothes hampers to sneakers, it’s enough to call on the real tough germ killing armed forces of flowers and plants! I’m not kidding! Essential oils of beautiful flowers and plants have the potential to knock out those germs! I did not say cover up – I said KNOCK OUT THE GERMS! Many essential oils are germicidal and therefore eliminate offensive odors by going to the core of the problem - BACTERIA!
Throw out the synthetic cans of air fresheners and replace them with bottles of pure essential oil aromatics made by you. It’s so easy and fun to make you’ll want to make extras for your friends.
Oh, did I mention that this was going to be easy??? Well, it is.
What you need:
Spray bottle (go for a big one for the summer!)
Labels and waterproof pen
Filtered Water
Witch Hazel
Essential Oils - choose 2-4 different oils from the this list:
Lavender, Lemon, Juniper, Lemongrass, Orange, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Geranium, Eucalyptus, Palma Rosa, Lime, Thyme, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Sage and Geranium
In general, for cleaning products and germ fighters, I like to use the following proportions:
| 12 oz |
filtered water |
| 3-4 oz |
witch hazel |
| 3-4 tea. |
Essential oils (using 2-4 different oils) |
For dirty laundry hampers and rooms with dirty laundry hampers, I like this blend:
Lavender, Eucalyptus and Lemon.
For smelly sneakers I like:
Tea Tree, Lavender and Geranium because these are all anti-fungal, too.
For cleaning counters in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry rooms I like:
Lemon, Lavender and Bergamot (use only 2-3 teaspoons essential oil for counter tops)
Shoe or laundry basket sachets:
Good old baking soda is always a great odor reducer. You can make little sachets of baking soda with essential oils and put them in and around the stinky problem areas. Make little sneaker bags to stick in those smelly shoes over night.
Use 1 cup of baking soda to 20-30 drops of essential oil. Mix well. Refresh as needed.
Remember to label your bottles and give them a good shake before spraying!
NOTE: Remember to keep essential oils out of the reach of children. They are very strong in undiluted form and can burn the skin. Of course, you do not want the children to be ingesting them either. Keep them put away as you would any other cleaner to be safe. As with other cleaners, do not spray on or near infants or children!
